Strategic Intelligence Examples

Regional Economic Strategy (RES): The key role of the Strategic and Spatial Intelligence team is to provide the evidence base supporting the Regional Economic Strategy, and related strategies and policies within the Agency and amongst its partners.

RES Targets: The team conducted a full analysis of economic, social and environmental datasets to develop a robust monitoring regime for the RES, and to set targets for the Northwest region for the coming RES period, 2006-2009.  Click here to access the RES supporting documentation and accompanying evidence base where you will find details about this work.

Aligning Strategies: To support the alignment of regional strategies in the Northwest, the team conducted a detailed spatial analysis of key datasets for the RES, the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) and Action for Sustainability (AfS).  The aim of this project was to align the strategic direction of key organisations operating in the region, whilst extracting and recognising the different spaical foci of different policy streams.

To support efforts to align the Northwest's key regional strategies, and in particular to inform discussion and debate at the recent Aligning Strategies Conference (26th May 2005), the NWDA Research Team conducted a series of in-depth spatial analyses of the Northwest, examining a broad range of economic, social and environmental datasets. The work was led by a multi-agency Steering Group comprising NWDA, 4NW, GONW and Environment Agency, and is an ongoing part of strategy development work at the regional level.

Two of the presentations - 'State of the Northwest - The Current Reality: Economy' given by Dr Peter White, Director of Strategy, North West Development Agency, and 'State of the Northwest - The Current Reality: Socio-Economic Issues' given by Steve Barwick, Director of Policy and Development, North West Regional Assembly - were based on the spatial analysis work conducted by the NWDA Research Team.

Policy Evaluation: The Research Team, in conjunction with NWDA Policy and NWDA Programme Office, is currently working on development a policy evaluation framework for the Agency.  This fits in with the wider agenda of evaluating performance in the English RDA's.  The aim of the project is to provide a comprehensive policy evaluation for two pilot policies, using these to develop a framework for future policy evaluations to be rolled out across the RDA.  More details to follow.

Northern Way: The team has conducted work to support the Northern Way, and continues to provide intelligence to expand the evidence base and inform activity under this important programme.

Supporting Agency activity: The team also contributes to the evidence base and activity of the full breadth of Agency projects, and seeks to provide assistance to partners conducting projects relating to the RES.  An example of work supporting a specific project is our spatial intelligence input into Project Access.
