Capabilities and Datasets

Desktop Mapping

The team utilises ESRI and MapInfo software solutions to deliver spatial intelligence.  These are Geogrpahical Information Systems (GIS) which allow data to be mapped geographically against a variety of boundary sets, or by plotting using x and y co-ordinates, addresses and postcodes.

Our GIS capabilities depends on Ordnance data including:-

Type of Data Available Data
Boundary Ward, Local Authority, County, Regional, National, Civil and Community District, Parliamentary Constituencies, Census Output and Super Output Areas.
Transport Networks A and B Minor Roads, Railways and Stations, Road Network and Nodes, Airports, Motorways & Junctions and Ferry Routes.
Countryside and Land Development Land Use, Settlements and National Park Boundaries.
Gazetteer Cities, Towns and Villages.
Postcode and Address Point Postcode Polygons, Postcode Point File and Address Point Postcode and Address.
Raster 1:50,000, 1:25,000, 1:10,000 and 1:2,500 Ordnance Survey Raster Tiles available for the entire Northwest Region as well as OS MasterMap and digital aerial photography coverage for the Northwest Region.

Using the Ordnance Survey data as a base, the team can map non-geographic data (provided it has a geographic reference, eg., postcode, boundary, etc.,).  Examples of datasets that can be mapped are:-

  • Census statistics
  • Annual Population Survey/Labour Force Survey
  • Other ONS statistics

Mapping using Ordnance Survey tiles and boundaries means that our work must adhere to the copyright and licensing agreements surrounding these.  For more information about this please visit http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/.

Web-Based Mapping

In addition to in-house, desktop mapping solutions the team has also commissioned the development of a web-mapping tool, Census Inside, details of which are available to RIN members.
