This page contains details of the various databases and toolkits held by the Regional Intelligence Unit and other applications which the RIU utilises.

Name of Database or Tool  Description
Corporate Researcher
  • Corporate Researcher provides online access to a database of information on over 2.8 million UK Limited Companies. The database is a source of detailed Company Reports on individual organisations, featuring location, industry sector & financial statements
  • Data can be analysed by geographic area, industry sector, number of employees & financial criteria as well as the ability to focus on an individual company in detail.
Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) Database
  • Holds information on all students in higher education.
  • Divides into 3 separate databases. All allow searches on institute studied at, gender, ethnicity, disability, region of domicile, qualification studied/obtained & mode of study. In addition searches can be done as follows:
  • Students Studying – Qualification on entry.(available annual between 1998/99 and 2005/06)
  • Students Qualifying – Classification of study. (available annual between 1998/99 and 2005/06)
  • First Location after Graduating – SIC & SOC codes of first career, first location after graduating. (available annual between 1998/99 and 2005/06)
Learning & Skills Council (LSC Data)
  • Holds information on all students studying within further education.
  • Allows searches on course area, qualification level and location.
The BETA Model

The BETA Model offers a very powerful way of analysing changes in the numbers and employment sizes of businesses.

  • You can explore changes in numbers of businesses from regional down to ward level and across both standard industrial classifications down to 4 digit or yellow pages classifications from 1999 to this year. The online reports include trends over time, survival rates, movements and benchmark reports. The analyses are based on commercially available datasets.
  • Analysis is available for:· full dynamic trends, survival rates, business movements and UK and regional benchmarks.- All reports are in Microsoft Excel Format. To access the reports you will need a username and password, further details can be found here.

Geographical Information Systems
  • Allows geographical mapping of data by postcode, LA ward and other geographical boundaries.
  • All data is mapped using Ordnance Survey tiles & boundaries and the RIU must adhere to the copyright & licensing agreements surrounding these.
  • 1:50000, 1:10000 and 1:2500 Ordnance Survey Tiles available for the entire Northwest Region.
  • Data can be applied (such as above mentioned databases) using geographic point (x,y co-ordinate and postcode).
  • Available data includes boundary, transport networks, countryside and land, gazetteer and postcode and addresspoint.

Digital Aerial Photography
  • 25cm digital aerial photography flown between 1999 and 2001.
  • Coverage of entire North West Region available (counties of Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire, Cumbria and Cheshire)
  • Ability to incorporate images into a GIS system for a wide range of spatial analysis purposes.
Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS)
  • Powerful survey software, which is the research and Higher Education Industries standard for survey research.
  • Allows users to carry out complicated statistical analysis of survey data, including statistical significance tests, cross tabulations and regression analysis.
Insite

InSite is an analysis tool provided by CACI that brings together database, mapping and reporting functionality. It enables users to uncover real intelligence, from finding trends to understanding locations in terms of people and demographics.

The NWDA Research Team has purchased a bespoke model of Insite which allows the team to analyse the three CACI datasets we hold: Street Value, Paycheck and Acorn either individually or alongside other datasets.
