On 1 April 2009, there will be a reorganisation of local government that will create new unitary authorities (UAs). Cheshire County Council will be split into two, along existing district council boundaries, as follows:-
Cheshire East UA will be formed from Congleton, Crewe & Nantwich and Macclesfield District Councils.
Cheshire West and Chester UA will be formed from Chester, Ellesmere Port and Vale Royal District Councils.
This reorganisation has implications for statistics that are produced for the outgoing local authorities, as well as creating the need to support the new administrative bodies.
Implications for Neighbourhood Statistics
The new areas will be included in the NeSS Geography Hierarchy with the addition of a new layer of Former Local Authority (FLA) so that data under the old structure are not lost.
Details of the new UA codes and previous naming convention can be found here.
What the changes mean to you
Statistics on the new areas will be available on the NeSS website from 1 April 2009. Where possible, NeSS will produce aggregated figures from existing data for new UAs
To incorporate the changes a new level has been introduced within the Neighbourhood Statistics Geography Hierarchy. The new level is Former Local Authority (FLA). For areas that have not changed the hierarchy will be GOR -> LA -> MSOA -> LSOA. For areas which have changed the sequence will be GOR -> UA -> FLA -> MSOA -> LSOA
Cheshire Area Profile
Two area profiles have been produced by the RIU, including Halton (March 2009) and excluding Halton (March 2009) (assuming that Halton UA falls within Merseyside sub-region). The profiles provide an overview of the sub-region with data on population, labour market, business and economy.
Maps of Cheshire
Two maps of Cheshire have been produced - one representing Cheshire including Halton and the other excluding Halton. Produced by the NWDA Research Team.
