REEIO - Resource Productivity NW

Gap Question:-

This project will assist the Northwest to understand the linkages between its economic and environmental strategy options and the resulting pressures on the environment. The model links economic activity with energy use, air emissions, water use and waste.

The Regional Environment-Economy Input-Output (REEIO) model was developed by the REWARD project - an R&D project that finished in December 2004 - and is based on a detailed model of each regional economy.

The model links economic and employment changes with key environmental and resource pressures - covering waste, energy, air emissions and water impacts.

The model was updated in 2005 to include the most recent data available.

Building on the REWARD project, a network has been created, called SCPnet, which is funded by a partnership of the Regional Development Agencies, the Regional Assemblies, the Environment Agency and WWF.

The purpose of SCPnet is threefold:

  • to promote the effective use of better evidence in designing policies that support sustainable consumption and production
  • to identify evidential gaps and develop further information, tools and approaches to support evidence-based policy
  • to assess progress in promoting sustainable consumption and production in the sponsoring regions

What is Reward (Regional and Welsh Appraisal of Resource Development)?

  • An interactive tool which links current and future economic activity to environmental pressures.
  • An interactive tool for analysis of trends and scenarios in the regional economy.
  • Comprehensive and accessible datasets on economic and environmental issues.
  • A capacity-building programme, which enhances strategic intelligence, appraisal methods and foresight activity in regional organizations.

The REEIO model will be launched at a regional inception meeting to be arranged for the end of May 2003.
