Volume and Value

STEAM

STEAM (Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Monitor) is an economic model owned and operated by Global Tourism Solutions. The model provides estimates of tourist numbers, tourist days and total revenue generated for:-

  • Tourists staying in serviced accommodation
  • Tourists staying in non-serviced accommodation
  • Tourists staying with friends/relatives
  • Day Visitors

It also provides estimates of employment supported by tourism expenditure broken down by sector (accommodation, food & drink, recreation, shopping, transport).

Overnight Visitors (serviced and non-serviced accommodation)

A key strength of STEAM is its "bottom-up" approach, i.e. the collection of local level data to build up an assessment of tourism demand.  A comprehensive collection of accommodation stock data (serviced and non-serviced) is undertaken each year, providing a valuable insight into the region's accommodation supply. Stock information is combined with occupancy data from the region's occupancy surveys and expenditure data from accommodation tariffs & visitor surveys to produce estimates of numbers of overnight tourists and levels of expenditure in serviced and non-serviced accommodation.

Overnight Visitors (Staying with Friends/Relatives (SFR))

Revenue estimates for the staying with friends/relatives (SFR) market are based on STEAM’s own array of SFR indicators applied to various types and sizes of destination. Key data analysed in estimating the volume and seasonality of SFR trips include resident population levels and trends in day and staying visitor markets.

Day Visitors

Day Visits include all non-regular trips lasting three hours or more, for leisure purposes, from home and from a holiday base, from within and from outside the region.  Click here for further information on Day Visitor estimates within STEAM.

Note: Generating estimates of day visiting is a very complex area and there is still much work to be done in securing reliable data for this segment.  STEAM reports are designed primarily to provide an indicative base to monitor trends rather than to give a precise measurement of tourism.
